If you're planning to surf the USA, no tour is complete without riding the cold waters of Yakutat, Alaska's surfing capital. Just across the bay rises Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. With views towards Mt. St. Elias and Malaspina Glacier from Yakutat, the city, self-advertised as 'more than just fishing', has the only sheltered deep water port in the Gulf of Alaska. For those not visiting Yakutat to catch steelhead, salmon or halibut at sea or on the Situk River, hunting guides in town offer big game expeditions.
Shoot some wildlife with a camera only on short hikes around Yakutat, or take a float plane into the Russell Fiord Wilderness, 15 miles to the northeast, to explore isolated icebergs and glaciers. Weather permitting, sit back and relax on the local 70 miles of sandy beaches.
Yakutat is located to the west of Haines and Skagway and to the east of Anchorage across the Gulf of Alaska.
