Description

A trip along the Dalton Highway is an adventure that will take you on the only road in the United States to cross the Yukon River, Arctic Circle, and Brooks Range. Named for James William Dalton, a North Slope engineer, the Dalton was originally developed as a haul road connecting the Yukon River and Prudhoe Bay during construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (AK)

Renowned for its wildlife, Arctic Refuge is inhabited by 45 species of land and marine mammals, ranging from the pygmy shrew to the bowhead whale.

Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge (AK)

Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge is, at 1.637 million acres, about the size of the state of Delaware. It sits atop the Arctic Circle, with approximately a third of the refuge above that meridian and two-thirds below.

Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge (AK)

A vast wetland basin bisected by the Yukon River, waterfowl, dall sheep, moose, bears, wolves, and many other animals call this refuge home.
